Westport move back into serious contention

image preview

A brace of wins in three day’s from last Thursday to Sunday along with table toppers Ballina Town suffering their first loss in the league this season, saw Westport United move to within two points of the table toppers last weekend. Westport United kicked off their weekend double header with a 4-1 win over Iorras Aontaithe at home, thanks to first half goals from Philip Keegan and Dave Hoban along with late, late strikes from JP O’Gorman and Vinny O’Malley in the final five minutes. Strangely, it was the same opponents who did Westport United a big favour last Sunday afternoon when they turned over the leaders, by the odd goal in five in Carnenash and leave only a brace of points between Ballina Town and Westport United going into this weekend’s round of games.

Westport United on the verge of historic cup defence

Sunday morning will see a mass exodus of football supporters from Westport, but rather than heading south to Galway they’ll be pointing their wagons east, in the direction of the small Roscommon village of Lecarrow about 17km west of Athlone to the home of the Roscommon and District Football League. It’s there that Westport United will be looking to put together a historic back-to-back pair of Connacht Junior Cup victories. Last years rain-sodden penalty shootout victory over Athenry in Terryland Park will go down in history as one of the great days in the famous junior club’s history, but if they manage on Sunday to bring the trophy home for the second time in as many years, they’ll be telling tales of this side for many, many years to come around the town.

Top of the table clash on Sunday

There is only one place to be on Sunday and that’s in Belleek Park at 2.30pm, Westport United, who wrestled the lead back in the Super League last weekend, will make the trip north to take on the side who were leading the league for the past couple of weeks. Ballina Town, whose game was postponed against Snugboro United last weekend, will be eager to reclaim the top spot in the league from the three in a row-chasing Westport men. Currently Westport are three points ahead with a slender on-goal advantage in the goal difference stakes, while Ballina have a game in hand on the champions. A win here and if they pick up a win in their postponed game could see a six-point swing at the top with Ballina moving three points clear.
